Muzeiko, located in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, is the first children’s museum in that country. Organized conceptually as a journey moving through time and space, visitors can three levels of exhibits. An especially interesting part of the design is Muzeiko’s unique façade with its so-called little mountains – three sculptured elements covered in wood, textiles and ceramics, recreating the traditional Bulgarian crafts of woodcarving, needlepoint and painted ceramics.
The building is designed in accordance with the LEED Gold standard and includes a series of green technologies for generating and storing energy, with reduced energy consumption, on site solar and geothermal energy production and high-quality construction materials.
The LEED process was initiated from the schematic design stages of the project. LEED certification was managed and administered by an award winning international sustainability consultant, Triple Green Building Group. Triple Green has certified numerous building projects in the US, Europe, Russia and the Middle East and works actively in the NGO sector to promote green building and support innovation in the development and construction sector. Their team was instrumental in shaping the overall sustainability strategy and building education platform for LEED related features, beyond the design and construction phase, and into operations, to ensure a healthy, safe and sustainable learning environment for the children of Bulgaria.
